Warming drinks for chilly winter days

    Fruit Wines 24th November 2020

With the last embers of Bonfire night well and truly burnt out and the nights drawing ever longer, we are heading into the home stretch of what has been a mightily challenging year, to say the least.

Whether you are wrapping up for a brisk country walk, or cosying up by the fire at home, we’ve got some spicy suggestions for warming winter drinks to keep you going until the brighter days arrive.

    Moreish mulled wine

As you would expect, our mulled wine is not your run-of-the-mill mulled wine.

We combine a delicious blend of damson and elderberry wines with notes of winter spices to create what we believe to be the tastiest mulled wine in the country. Gently heat a generous splash in a saucepan and serve warm – with a tot of brandy if you like.

If you know this is already one of your seasonal favourites, or if you are planning ahead for a future festive gathering, our three litre bag-in-box mulled wine contains 24 scrumptious servings of this fruity classic.

    Celebrated mulled cider

For the apple afficionados amongst you, our mulled cider is a sublime combination of our award-winning Jack Ratt Scrumpy cider infused with a handful of seasonal spices.

Again, heat gently in a saucepan – or keep an eye on it on a low heat in the microwave – and serve warm, with a cinnamon stick stirrer for an extra kick.

    Lugger rum hot toddy

Someone we reckon knew a thing or two about keeping warm in colder days is notorious 18th century local smuggler Jack Rattenbury, after whom our Jack Ratt products are named.

A rough and ready adventurer, Jack smuggled contraband into Lyme Bay using fishing boats called ‘Luggers’, which inspired the name of our award-winning Lugger rum. To make it, we age Caribbean rum in bourbon-charred oak barrels right here in Devon before spicing it with nutmeg, orange-peel, cloves and vanilla to create a superlative spiced rum that is perfect for making a steaming rum hot toddy.

Everyone has their own preference for how to make the best hot toddy, but as long as you have hot water, a couple of teaspoons of honey and lemon, and lashings of Lugger rum, you can experiment with the proportions to suit your taste.

If you’re more of a straight-up Lugger lover, our 5cl mini version makes the perfect taster bottle to slip into your coat pocket for that winter ramble, perk up an after-dinner coffee, or sip and savour by a roaring log fire.
