Mead, Reimagined: A Refreshing Take On An Old Time Classic

To many, mead has a distinct association with the past, and it’s unlikely to be the first thing to spring to someone’s mind if you were to stop them in the street and ask them to name an alcoholic beverage. However, here at Lyme Bay Winery, we believe this complex and intriguing drink is something that modern-day drinkers will love too, if given the chance.

Over the last few years, we have been working hard on an exciting new take on mead fit for the modern age. It’s refreshing, light and something to be very excited about. We sat down with a member of the team behind the creations to bring you an inside look at the creative process behind our new line of sparkling meads.

What inspired you to create this product?

The idea originated in early 2023. We wanted to create a drink that combines the amazing classic notes of honey and fruit, found in traditional mead, but in a fresh, modern form. Whilst our new sparkling mead drinks hold much of what makes classic mead so delicious, we wanted to give it a modern-day twist. That’s where the concept of creating a lighter, sparkling mead came from. We decided it should be something refreshing, playful and low in alcohol, whilst still true to our craft and heritage.

After working with postgraduate students at Hult Business School and running several rounds of consumer testing, it became clear there was a genuine appetite for mead with a light, sparkling taste.

What has surprised non-mead drinkers the most when they try sparkling mead?

They are most surprised by how light and refreshing these drinks are! Many people still think of mead as rich and heavy, but our sparkling mead is crisp, vibrant and easy to drink. Much more like a gently sparkling fruit drink with a soft honey note. It completely redefines what people expect from mead.

In fact, one of my favourite things about the product is how much I’ve noticed it can surprise people who have never tried mead before. It changes their perception of what the drink can be. We’ve taken a traditional drink and given it a modern, youthful twist. Creating something that feels exciting and new, but familiar.

What inspired the can design?

We wanted the packaging to embody the freshness, energy and spirit of the product itself. We used bright colours, clean lines, and modern typography to create a light, refreshing design that instantly catches the eye. Incorporating convenience into the product was also very important for us. That’s why we opted for a can. Making the drink perfect for picnics, festivals, or simply relaxing outdoors.

Which of the two flavours would you recommend to someone who has never tried mead?

That is a really tough one! Both flavours are excellent, but if I had to choose, Strawberry & Elderflower gets my recommendation. It’s delicately floral, balanced, and very pleasant to the taste. Raspberry Lemonade is brighter and fresher, with a distinct fruity character, making it ideal for those who prefer refreshing, upbeat drinks.

How did you select the flavours for the sparkling meads?

Initially, we tested a whole range of different flavours, from sampling classic berry combinations to more unusual fruit and floral ones. Options included Raspberry Lemonade, Strawberry & Elderflower, Apple & Cherry, Peach & Rose, Classic Rhubarb and Fiery Ginger. Ultimately, Strawberry & Elderflower and Raspberry Lemonade stood out as excellent options. They are bright, natural and perfectly capture visions of a quintessentially English summer.
