The Perfect Mother's Day Wine
Most Mother’s Day gifts are chosen quickly. A good bottle of wine is a little different, especially when there’s a story behind it worth telling.
We’ve been making fruit wines, meads and liqueurs in East Devon for over thirty years. More recently, we turned that experience towards English grape wines, and it’s that combination of heritage and ambition that shapes everything we produce today. Here’s what goes into the bottles we’d recommend this Mothering Sunday, and why we think they’re worth giving.
The Classic Cuvée: a wine that took five years to make
The Classic Cuvée 2019 is our most complex sparkling wine, and it didn’t arrive quickly. Made in the traditional method from Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc. Sourced from seven named vineyards across Essex, Herefordshire, Kent and Dorset. It was bottled for secondary fermentation and then left on lees for a minimum of sixty months before release.
That extended ageing is what builds the depth: toasted brioche and roasted hazelnut, layered with honey, dried apple, almond and a subtle citrus finish. Fine bubbles, pale gold, and a richness that holds up well against food or on its own. It’s a wine that rewards the kind of Sunday afternoon you’re not in a hurry to end.
Worth considering if she’s someone who appreciates knowing where her wine comes from and what’s gone into making it.
The Brut Reserve: fresh, fruit driven, made for the moment
Where the Classic Cuvée takes its time, the Brut Reserve NV is made to be open and immediate. Deliberately aged for just nine to twelve months to hold onto its freshness. Clean, vibrant, lemon and green apple on the nose, with a creamy mousse finish.
It won a gold at the Food & Drink Devon Awards 2023.
It’s the sparkling wine for turning a Sunday lunch into an occasion without making a fuss of it. The one you open before dinner, or with smoked salmon, or simply because it’s the right kind of day.
The Cherry Wine: the one people don't expect

Where the wines come from
Lyme Bay’s roots are in fruit wines, meads and liqueurs. A craft we’ve honed for over three decades. Our English grape wines are a newer chapter, built on the same attention to quality but drawing on a carefully chosen network of growers and vineyards across the south of England. From sites in Essex, Herefordshire, Hampshire, Dorset, Kent and Devon, selected for the quality of the fruit they produce year after year.
Working closely with growers who know their land, and drawing on the best sites each harvest, has made Lyme Bay the most awarded English still wine producer in the country. Not a single good vintage, but years of considered decisions about where the best fruit comes from and how to make the most of it.
