A global toast of all things gin, World Gin Day – held on the second Saturday in June – was the brainchild of gin aficionado Neil Houston, who started the celebration in Birmingham in 2009 and encouraged his friend Emma Stokes to bring it to London in 2010.
Emma formally took charge of the day in 2013 and has grown the commemoration into an international festival with events running in over 30 countries around the world, as well as reaching over 200 million gin fans on social media channels.
Emma is also the author of the fabulous book The Periodic Table of Cocktails, which she described as “basically the way my brain works in hardback format”.
“The idea behind the book is to take the concept and principles behind the periodic table (that orders all of the known elements that make up the world by atomic number and therefore chemical properties and behaviour), and apply them to the topic of cocktails”, says Emma, referencing the more than 100 cocktails included in the book, each with a short history before a recipe and method are included.
This year’s World Gin Day falls on 11 June 2022, and being no slouch ourselves when it comes to the gin mix stakes, we’ve got some gin and tonic suggestions to snazz up your celebrations – all featuring our award-winning Lyme Bay Winery Gins no less.
Dry Gin
Our beautifully fresh and invigorating Dry Gin bursts with traditional botanical flavours of juniper, floral and citrus notes alongside intoxicating aromas of verbena and the freshness of orange peel, lemon and lime.
Enjoy this most uplifting of gins with fine Mediterranean tonic water and a slice of lemon from dusk till dawn, and with a twist of orange peel from dawn till dusk. And of course, the smoothness and elegance of the gin help make for a fine dry martini.
Elderflower & Cucumber Gin
Our Elderflower & Cucumber Gin is a mouth-watering spirit with heady aromas of elderflower and cucumber structured around juniper, coriander and angelica botanicals to create a floral character.
The best garnishes for floral gins such as this are ribbons or slices of cucumber, and you can add edible flowers for extra flair and fragrance. When it comes to tonic pairings we recommend a light tonic, or if elderflower is really your thing, an elderflower tonic adds a delicately sweet flavour to the drink.
Pink Grapefruit Gin
This mouth-watering gin bursts with the flavours of pink grapefruit, orange peel and lime alongside the more delicate botanical aromas of juniper and elderflower.
Spectacular over ice or as a different G&T serve, you can bring out the grapefruit flavour even more with a twist of the fruit to garnish and pair with a light tonic that allows the pink grapefruit’s flavours to burst through.
Orange & Thyme Gin
Our Orange & Thyme Gin draws together the bittersweet citrus flavours of blood orange with the gentle peppermint notes of thyme for a spectacular take on a classic combination.
Blended with juniper, coriander and angelica, the resultant marriage is best served in a tall glass with a premium tonic and a generous wedge of orange.
