There’s a lovely unhurried quality to Easter. The table is set properly, the food has had time and attention, and lunch has a way of stretching into the afternoon. It deserves wine that’s been given the same thought.
English wine is rather well suited to this kind of cooking. Our cool climate whites bring a natural freshness that lifts rich dishes. Our Pinot Noir has the quiet elegance that lamb calls for. And our sparkling wines, made the traditional way, from English grown grapes. Help bring a sense of occasion all of their own.
Here’s how we’d pair our wines with every course of the Easter weekend, from Good Friday fish through to the Sunday roast and whatever follows.
Begin with a toast
Easter should begin with something a little celebratory. English sparkling wine is made using the same traditional method as Champagne. A second fermentation in the bottle that creates those fine, persistent bubbles. The character, though, is its own. Ours tends to be a touch more fruit forward, a little more immediately inviting, shaped by the English climate and the grape varieties that thrive here.
- Brut Reserve NV Vibrant and refreshing, with notes of citrus and toast. Lovely with smoked salmon canapés, devilled eggs, or simply on its own while everyone gathers.
- Sparkling Rosé NV Soft red berry fruits and a beautifully fine mousse. A Decanter Silver medal winner, and a wonderful aperitif in its own right. Or pair it with a charcuterie board to set the tone for the weekend.
Good Friday: wine for fish
The Good Friday tradition calls for fish, and a crisp English white is about as natural a companion as you’ll find. Whether it’s a whole baked sea bass, a simple piece of pan fried sole, or something more indulgent like fish pie, you want a wine with enough brightness to complement the dish without overshadowing it.
- Shoreline 2024 A WineGB 2025 Silver medal winner and one of our most versatile whites. A multi variety English white blend, that makes it a natural match for anything from the sea. If you enjoy Sauvignon Blanc, do try Shoreline. It has that same vivacity, with a character that’s distinctly English.
- Covepoint Chardonnay Dry and lightly oaked, with a generosity that belies its price. A dependable choice for fish pie, prawn cocktail, or a simple lemon butter sole. And a lovely bottle to have on the table when you’re feeding a few more people than planned.
Easter Sunday: The Lamb
For most families in the UK, Easter Sunday means lamb, seasoned with rosemary and garlic, roasted until the kitchen smells wonderful. And brought to the table with all the trimmings. It’s a beautifully wine friendly dish: rich but not heavy, with herby, savoury depth that rewards a thoughtful pairing.
- Pinot Noir 2024 Our latest vintage, following the 2021 that won the IWC trophy for Best English Red. Concentrated and refined, with red cherry and raspberry lifted by a gentle savoury spice that echoes the herbs on the lamb. A wine for a special table. We’d suggest serving it a touch below room temperature.
- Covepoint Pinot Noir For a more relaxed Sunday lunch, maybe a roast chicken rather than lamb, or a gathering where the mood is more easy going. Covepoint offers wild raspberry and cherry with a touch of black pepper and gentle oak. Remarkably good value, and very easy to enjoy.
For a meat free Easter table
Easter tables are becoming wonderfully varied. Spring vegetable tarts, mushroom wellingtons, roasted beetroot with goat’s cheese. These are dishes worth celebrating in their own right, and they pair beautifully with the right wine.
For anything earthy or mushroom-rich, Covepoint Pinot Noir (£14.49) is a lovely match. It is light enough to let the food speak, but with enough character of its own. For greener, more herby dishes, like asparagus, pea risotto, herb crusted goat’s cheese, reach for Bacchus 2023 (£14.99).
Bacchus is England’s signature white grape, and ours has a lovely freshness to it — elderflower and grapefruit on the nose, with lychee and pear coming through on the palate. It really does come alive alongside spring cooking.
Something sweet to finish
For pudding, we’d gently steer you towards the wider Lyme Bay collection. Our country wines are crafted from real English fruit and botanicals, and they make a rather lovely match with Easter desserts.
- Cherry Wine is rich and full flavoured, with a depth that pairs wonderfully with dark chocolate.
- Elderflower Wine is quite the opposite. A light, fragrant, and refreshing wine. And it’s delightful alongside Simnel cake, hot cross bun pudding, or anything gently spiced.
- And for those who prefer something drier with their chocolate, a glass of our Sparkling Rosé makes a quietly elegant finish to the meal.
